Tax relief
You pay pension contributions out of gross pay (before deduction of income tax), so the net cost of joining the LGPS is usually reduced by 20%. If you pay tax at the higher rate, you save even more.
If you earn less than £6475pa (£540pm or £125pw) you will not pay tax and so this reduction will not apply to you.
