Deferred benefits

Deferred benefits are a package of benefits that are held in your local pension fund, until payment at a future date.

You will have deferred benefits:

In England and Wales if you left the LGPS:

  • between 6 April 1988 and 31 March 2004, with at least 2 years membership (or had transferred in previous pension rights)
  • before 6 April 1988, with at least 5 years membership

In Scotland if you left the LGPS:

  • after 5 April 1988, with at least 2 years membership (or had transferred in previous pension rights)
  • before 6 April 1988, with at least 5 years membership

and you are not yet receiving payment of your benefits or have not transferred them onto a new pension provider.
